WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team fell in a dual meet at Drexel University on Saturday afternoon. Swimming in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the Hoya women fell to the Dragons 169-125 while the men's squad was topped, 176-112.
On the women's side, Georgetown was led by
Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) who won both the freestyle distance events. She cruised to a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:28.12, finishing 13 seconds ahead of teammate
Noelle Fimbres (La Mirada, Calif. / Sonora) who touched the wall in second place. Barrett won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:04.57, nearly eight seconds ahead of the next finisher.
On the diving boards,
Riley Fujioka (Los Altos, Calif. / Los Altos) set the program record in the 1-meter dive, recording a score of 293.93 in her 10 dives. She swept both the 1- and 3-meter events, while her classmate
Naomi Peng (Gainesville, Fla. / Eastside) took third in both.
Michael Wheeler (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo) got the men's squad off to a strong start with an easy victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle. He touched the wall in 9:33.78, almost 18 seconds ahead of his Drexel opponent.
Carlson Temple (San Diego, Calif. / Patrick Henry) picked up GU's other individual win in the lanes with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:06.17, winning by a 0.15-second margin.
Griffin Edmonds (Norwalk, Conn. / New Canaan) won the 3-meter dive and finished second in the 1-meter event.
The Hoyas will have next weekend off before wrapping up the regular season with a two-day, tri-meet with BIG EAST opponents Providence and Seton Hall in South Orange, New Jersey. In GU's final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championships (Feb. 20-23), the diving portion of the meet will take part on Friday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m., while the swimming will begin on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
