WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's basketball team (12-7, 2-4 BIG EAST) looks to avenge an earlier season loss to St. John's (15-4, 3-4 BIG EAST) in a rematch on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Madison Square Garden. The game opens a span where the Hoyas play three of their next four games on the road.
Tipoff is scheduled for noon and a link to live stats is available at GUHoyas.com. The game can be seen live on FOX with Gus Johnson calling the play-by-play, Jim Jackson serving as the analyst and Andy Katz as the sideline reporter. The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 radio station with Rich Chvotkin in his 45th season on the call. Additionally, Sunday's game will be broadcast on SiriusXM (channel 380/971) and will be immediately preceded by the debut of
Center Court with Patrick Ewing on SiriusXM ESPNU (channel 84) at 11 a.m.
The Hoyas are coming off a tough 91-87 loss to Creighton on Monday night.
Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) led three in double figures with 22 points while adding a game-best 12 rebounds for his BIG EAST-leading seventh double-double of the season.
Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) and
Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) each chipped in 10 points to round out those in double figures.
James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) dished out a career-high 11 assists to pace the offense.
Govan continues to pace Georgetown offense with 19.8 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game, both team-bests. Akinjo and McClung both average double figures with 13.7 and 13.2 ppg, respectively. LeBlanc is just off the double-digit mark with 9.2 ppg and is second on GU in rebounding with 7.7 boards a contest. Akinjo averages 5.2 assists per game and has set career highs in back-to-back contests.
Sunday's showdown is a rematch of a 97-94 overtime victory for St. John's on Jan. 5. Govan led all Hoyas with 25 points to go with 10 rebounds while LeBlanc recorded a double-double on 12 points and a team-leading 13 boards. Akinjo added 17 while
Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C. / Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) and
Greg Malinowski (Chantilly, Va. / Episcopal / William & Mary) each chipped in 13 to round out those in double figures. Shamorie Ponds led the Red Storm with 37 points.
St. John's has dropped three of four BIG EAST games since the overtime thriller in the Nation's Capital. The Red Storm are coming off an 80-71 loss on the road at Butler. Ponds and Mustapha Heron both tallied 20 points in the loss.
Ponds is one of five St. John's players averaging double figures, leading the Red Storm with 20.6 ppg. Heron, LJ Figueroa, Marvin Clark II and Justin Simon chip in 15.3, 14.6, 12.4 and 11.1 ppg, respectively. Figueroa paces SJU on the boards with 6.9 rpg and Ponds facilitates the offense with 5.7 apg.
Following Sunday's game, the Hoyas return home on Thursday, Jan. 31 as they take on Xavier at Capital One Arena. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
