WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University Athletics Department and the Georgetown baseball program have announced the launch of a $10 million Georgetown Baseball Campaign for Excellence. Designed around the three pillars necessary to achieve athletic success – scholarships, facilities and coaching excellence – this campaign will transform Georgetown baseball and both the game day and practice experiences for the student-athletes who represent the Blue & Gray.
Baseball is one of Georgetown's oldest and most distinguished varsity sport programs. Originally known as the College Nine, the team's May 10, 1870 game against Columbian College (now George Washington University) holds the distinction as the university's first officially recorded intercollegiate contest.
The baseball program has a special place in the history of Georgetown University. With its recent successes – two BIG EAST Conference Championship appearances in the past four years and 13 MLB draft picks in the past decade – the program is poised to continue on its trajectory toward becoming an elite program within the BIG EAST and on the national stage.
The Georgetown Baseball Campaign for Excellence begins following several important investments in the program funded by the community over the past three years, including a renovation of the team's on-campus locker room, development of an on-campus indoor batting cages/bullpen area and the opening of the John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center. This new facility has impacted the daily training and support experience of the student-athletes, providing meeting and study spaces as well as state of-the-art medical and strength/conditioning spaces.
"The impact of these recent, donor-funded improvements and updates for the program are profound," noted Head Coach
Pete Wilk. "We are so excited that our community has partnered with the university to continually invest in resources that will positively impact Georgetown baseball."
With investments of $6M for expanded scholarship offerings, $1.5M for improved coaching compensation, and $3M for facility enhancements at Shirley Povich Field, this campaign will ensure Georgetown baseball has the resources needed for a program on the rise.
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Lee Reed and Volunteer Chair Tom Purcell (F'93) are pleased to announce that over $3M in cash gifts have already been received toward the campaign's scholarship and field priorities.
"It is thanks in large part to these commitments that we are able to launch this ambitious and important campaign," shared Reed. "We hope these partnerships will inspire the larger baseball community to support the initiatives that will transform the experience of our talented student-athletes and coaches."
Georgetown baseball seeks to recruit the best and brightest student-athletes and is committed to consistently improving the experience of its baseball student-athletes by providing them with the facilities and resources they need to train and compete at an elite level.
