Penalty Kicks Earn No. 10 Georgetown a Win Over Xavier

WASHINGTON – The No. 10 Georgetown women's soccer team defeated the Xavier Musketeers 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field off of a pair of penalty kicks. Senior Carson Nizialek took both PKs in the first half before GU allowed the Musketeers to get away with a late goal. With the win, the Hoyas advance to 10-2-1 on the year and remain undefeated in the BIG EAST with a 4-0-0 record while Xavier falls to 9-3-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the league.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH

I didn't think we played particularly well. Xavier made it a game against us and I thought they played very well. The game became about individual battles and individual duels, which helped them defend us. They were hungry and excited to play and well up for the game. We never found our rhythm. I don't think a win for us is a fair result. At best, a draw would have been a fair result for us, but we take it and we move on. I give Xavier credit today. They didn't sit back and they had a plan. It was one of those games that I'm happy to have in the rearview mirror. Now we face Creighton on Sunday, which will be a different kind of game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas got on the board in the 25th minute when sophomore Boo Jackson was fouled amongst Xavier defenders and GU was awarded a penalty kick. Nizialek took the PK and managed to get by the Musketeers' goalkeeper Olivia Jenkins to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Just before the half, graduate student Amanda Carolan was tripped while trying to score past two Xavier defenders. Once again, the Hoyas were given a penalty kick which Nizialek took to go 2 for 2 on the day.
  • Xavier had a good chance to enter the scoring column in in the 48th minute when freshman keeper Anna Leat stepped out of the box, but senior defender Meaghan Nally cleared it just in time.
  • In the 86th minute, Xavier's top scorer Samantha Dewey managed to get her shot past Leat as she stepped out to save the ball. XU capped the scoring 2-1.
OF NOTE
  • Georgetown extends its win streak to seven games and recorded its 15th-straight BIG EAST win.
  • The Musketeers outshot the Blue & Gray 10-4 and took six corners to GU's two.
  • In goal, both keepers tallied two saves each.
