No. 11 Women’s Soccer Continues BIG EAST Play at Villanova and Providence

WASHINGTON – The No. 11 Georgetown women's soccer team (7-2-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) will hit the road for a pair of games this week, starting with Villanova on Thursday and Providence on Sunday. The Hoyas will face the Wildcats (5-3-2, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) at Higgins Soccer Complex at 4 p.m. On Sunday, GU will take on the Friars (6-3-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff time.

About the Hoyas

  • Georgetown blanked the Marquette Golden Eagles 3-0 on Sunday in the BIG EAST opener at Shaw Field.
  • Freshman Julia Leas managed a strike from 30 yards to start the scoring for the Hoyas in the 18th minute. Graduate student Amanda Carolan added a pair of goals in the win as well.
  • Carolan was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday and freshman Anna Leat earned her first league honor as Freshman of the Week. Additionally, senior Meaghan Nally earned a nod to the Weekly Honor Roll.
  • Carolan leads the squad with 17 points off of seven goals and three assists. She has scored a goal in each of the last four contests.
  • The Hoyas moved up to No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll after sitting at the No. 12 spot for the last two weeks. This is their highest ranking since the preseason poll when GU was ranked seventh.
  • Georgetown leads the BIG EAST in multiple categories: points (82), goals (26), assists (30) and corners (79).
  • The team sits among the top 10 in the country in several categories: fifth in corners per game (7.90), eighth in total assists (28), ninth in assists per game (2.80) and 10th in points per game (8.00)

Scouting Villanova

  • The Wildcats shut out Xavier 1-0 on Sunday in their BIG EAST opener with a second half goal by Brice McInroy.
  • McInroy leads the team with 11 points on the season off of five goals and an assist.
  • In goal, Rebecca Gartner and Hensley Hancuff share playing time. Combined, the netminders have allowed 14 goals on the year and 48 saves.
  • On Monday, McInroy and Garnter earned spots on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Scouting Providence

  • Providence blanked St. John's 4-0 on Saturday in the BIG EAST opener. Four different Friars scored in the victory and goalkeeper Shelby Hogan recorded her 20th career shutout, earning a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.
  • Hannah McNulty added a goal to the win and leads the team with 10 points off of five goals.
  • The Friars have held their opponents to no more than one goal in each match this year.

                                                                                                                        

Series History vs. the Wildcats

  • Thursday will be the 26th meeting between GU and Villanova. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 12-10-3, but the Hoyas have won the past four meetings and have outscored VU 17-3 in the last five.
  • The most recent meeting occurred on Oct. 7, 2018 at Shaw Field when the Blue & Gray won 1-0 in an overtime thriller.

Series History vs. the Friars

  • Sunday will be the 19th meeting between the Hoyas and Providence. GU leads the all-time series 12-3-3.
  • The last meeting was on Oct. 14, 2018 at Shaw Field when Georgetown scored a late game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to come out on top 1-0.

 

What Lies Ahead

The Blue & Gray will host Xavier on Thursday, Oct. 10 and Creighton on Sunday, Oct. 13 at Shaw Field. Sunday's match against the Bluejays will be aired live on BEDN.
