WASHINGTON – Georgetown University swimming & diving sophomore
Gabriella Meringolo has been named the BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The award, the fifth of the season for the Hoyas, recognizes Meringolo's performance in Georgetown's sweep at Davidson on Saturday.
Meringolo led the Hoya women with two individual victories as she swept the 100- and 200-yard butterfly races. Her time of 58.01 in the 100 fly was a season best and she won the event by .60 seconds. She won the 200 fly by a full second with a time of 2:08.25, her best time this season which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST this season.
The GU women overcame a deficit in the final few races to defeat the Wildcats 149-145, while the Hoya men came away with a 166-132 victory. It was Georgetown's third-straight sweep to start the season.
The Hoyas will travel to BIG EAST rival Villanova for a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 2. Swimming is set to begin at noon.
