Carolan’s Pair of First-Half Goals Leads No. 11 Hoyas Past Friars

WASHINGTON – The No. 11 Georgetown women's soccer team blanked the Providence Friars 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Senior Amanda Carolan scored a pair of goals in the first half to lead the Hoyas past the Friars and sophomore Boo Jackson had a foot in three of GU's four goals on the day. With the win, the Blue & Gray extends its seven-game win streak and improves to 9-2-1 on the season and 3-0-0 in the BIG EAST while Providence falls to 7-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the league.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH

This has to be one of our more complete performances over these last few years. I cannot praise the girls enough for today's victory. Across the board, everybody was outstanding. In particular, the back three gave us the security to go forward with confidence and this allowed the front trio of Jenna Menta, Paula Germino-Watnick and Carolan to do a lot of damage. We are getting better every game and are excited to host both Xavier and Creighton next weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Carolan put the Hoyas on the board in the 28th minute with a pass from sophomore Boo Jackson. Jackson dribbled past a pair of Friar defenders and found Carolan inside the box, who knocked it in before toppling over goalkeeper Shelby Hogan to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Minutes later, senior Carson Nizialek set up a play from the top of the box, finding Jackson on her left who connected with Carolan, replicating a similar play from GU's first goal on the day. Carolan's second made it 2-0 for the Blue & Gray.
  • In the 75th minute, Germino-Watnick took a shot that was deflected by Hogan in the net and Menta followed up on the shot and was able to get it past Hogan off of the rebound, extending Georgetown's lead to 3-0.
  • With just five minutes left to play, Germino-Watnick capped off the scoring as Jackson crossed the ball from the left side to the senior in the middle of the six-yard box.

OF NOTE

  • Carolan's pair of goals put her at No. 4 on the all-time list at Georgetown with 32 career goals.
  • The Hoyas are on a seven-game winning streak and earned their fifth-straight shutout this season. They also continued their 15-game unbeaten streak in the BIG EAST.
  • GU outshot Providence 21-6 and allowed the Friars to take just two shots in the second half. The Blue & Gray took eight corners compared to Providence's two.
  • Freshman Anna Leat made two saves in goal.
  • Germino-Watnick led both teams with nine shots on the day.
