Women’s Soccer Hosts Longtime Rival West Virginia in NCAA First Round

WASHINGTON – The No. 25 Georgetown women's soccer team will host its longtime rival West Virginia in the first round of the 2019 Division I NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for noon at Shaw Field. Both the Hoyas (13-4-3) and the Mountaineers (10-7-1) received an at-large bid into the tournament this season.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown fell to top-seeded Xavier 2-0 on Sunday in the BIG EAST Championship game in Omaha, Nebraska. The second-seeded Hoyas advanced to the title game by blanking Providence 2-0 in the semifinals with goals from Kelly Ann Livingstone and Amanda Carolan.
  • Saturday will be GU's 10th overall and eighth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Carolan leads the Blue & Gray with 29 points from 11 goals and seven assists. Paula Germino-Watnick is close behind with 26 points from nine goals and eight assists. Julia Leas rounds out the top three on the squad with 12 points from four goals and four helpers.
  • Germino-Watnick was unanimously selected as the BIG EAST's Midfielder of the Year while Meaghan Nally was named Defensive Player of the Year. Both were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team along with Carolan. Jenna Royson and Anna Leat were both named to the Second Team and Leat and Leas were unanimous selections to the All-Freshman Team.
  • The Hoyas are 12-7-4 in the NCAA Tournament and hold a 5-1-3 record in the first round.
Scouting West Virginia
  • The Mountaineers fell to Kansas 2-0 in the Big 12 Quarterfinals last week, who then went on to win in the league's championship title.
  • Alina Stahl leads WVU with 12 points from five goals and a pair of helpers. Julianne Vallerand is a close second on the team with 11 points off of five goals and one assist.
  • Rylee Foster has started in 18 games at goal for the Mountaineers and registers a 1.28 GAA along with a .747 save percentage. Foster was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team this year.
 
Series History vs. Mountaineers
  • Saturday will be the 24th meeting against the Mountaineers, who lead the all-time series 15-6-2.
  • The two teams met earlier this season at Shaw Field and GU shut out the Mountaineers 3-0. Royson, Leas and Carolan each scored a goal in the victory.
  • Georgetown and West Virginia met once before in the NCAA Tournament during the 2014 season. The two teams drew a 0-0 tie and the Hoyas advanced to the next round off of penalty kicks.
 
What Lies Ahead
The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and will face the winner between No. 4-seeded Rutgers and Central Connecticut State. For more information, visit NCAA.com.
