WASHINGTON – Georgetown University swimming & diving junior Drew Carbone has been named the BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week, as announced the by the conference on Tuesday. The award, which recognizes Carbone's performance at the Terrier Invitational over the weekend, is his second of the season and the ninth of the season.
 
Carbone won three individual titles and helped lead the Hoyas to two relay victories against the four-team field that included ACC opponent Boston College. The junior came away with an event win in the 200-yard IM by an 11-second margin with a time of 1:48.18, the fastest in the BIG EAST this season by more than two seconds. Carbone set the best time in the conference with his win in the 100-yard backstroke (48.36), and his winning time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.16) set a pool record.
 
In his first time swimming in the event this year, Carbone came in second in the 100-yard butterfly with the third-best time in the BIG EAST, a 49.87 mark. Carbone swam the opening leg for the winning 400-yard medley relay team and the anchor leg for the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team.
 
The Hoya men finished second and the women's team placed third at the Terrier Invitational. The men's squad finished with 976.5 points, behind only Boston College (1,192). The Hoyas placed ahead of both UMass (723.5) and the host Terriers (709). The GU women accumulated 708.5 points to finish behind both BC (997) and Northeastern (759), while topping BU (634.5), UMass (461) and New Hampshire (289).
 
COMING UP NEXT
Following this weekend's meet, the Hoyas will send several swimmers to the U.S. Winter Nationals, held at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The four-day meet, Dec. 4-7, will serve as an opportunity to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials.
