Carbone Earns Second-Straight BIG EAST Athlete of the Week Honor

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University swimming & diving junior Drew Carbone has been named the BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week, as announced the by the conference on Tuesday. The award, which recognizes Carbone's performance at the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open last week, is his third of the season and the 10th of the season for the Hoyas.
 
He competed in three events at the U.S. Open in Atlanta, which served as an opportunity to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, held in Omaha, Nebraska this summer. Carbone, who already qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100-yard backstroke, swam another qualifying time of 56.59 seconds in the prelims, which tied for 23rd overall. The junior went on to win a three-person swim off in 55.97 seconds to advance to the C final where he shaved off more time as he came away with a victory when he touched the wall in 55.86 seconds. Carbone tied for 64th overall in the 200-meter IM and came in 45th in the 200-meter backstroke, another event in which he had already qualified for the Olympic Trials.
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Hoyas will break for finals and Christmas before heading out on their annual training trip at the beginning of January. The second semester will start with a dual meet at George Washington on Jan. 18.
