WASHINGTON – Four members of the Georgetown University swimming & diving competed over the first two days of the Toyota U.S. Open. The USA Swimming-sponsored meet, held at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, serves as an opportunity to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, held in Omaha, Nebraska this summer.
MICHAEL WHEELER
- Wheeler opened the meet on Wednesday evening in the 800-meter freestyle. He won his heat with a personal-best time of 8:13.47, but just missed the qualifying standard by less than a half second.
- He was back in the pool on Thursday morning for the prelims of the 400-meter freestyle where he set a personal record. Wheeler placed fifth in his heat in 3:59.54 to finish 53rd overall.
BRETT SHERMAN
- Sherman also swam in the preliminary heats for the 400 free, finishing just a few spots behind Wheeler. His time of 4:00.93 was good for 60th place out of 141 entrants.
DREW CARBONE
- Carbone tied for 64th overall in the 200-meter IM as he touched the wall in 2:07.93. He held the lead in his heat at the midway point and was second after 150 meters.
SEAN DEVLIN
- Devlin raced to a sixth-place finish in his heat of the 50-meter freestyle. His time of 24.23 seconds tied for 141st overall.
COMING UP NEXT
The U.S. Open will continue on Friday as six Hoyas will take to the pool for preliminary heats starting at 10 a.m., which will be streamed at usaswimming.org. The evening finals will start at 6:50 p.m. and will be also be streamed with a live broadcast on nbcsports.com starting at 7 p.m.
Friday's racing will consist of the 400 IM (Sherman), 200 free (Carbone,
Josiah Lauver), 100 breast (
Nathaniel Goldfarb,
Samantha Kim,
Connor Morikawa) and 100 back (Carbone).
