Women’s Basketball to Face Columbia and Fordham this Weekend

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team will play a pair of games in New York City this weekend.  The Hoyas will play Columbia on Friday at 11 a.m., before taking on Fordham on Sunday at 2 p.m.  Georgetown is currently 2-5 on the season, and these contests will complete a five-game road swing.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown went 1-1 at the LMU Thanksgiving Classic last weekend.
  • On Friday, GU used a big performance from beyond the arc to pick up a 64-53 win over the Loyola Marymount Lions.
  • Brianna Jones led the Blue & Gray with 16 points and six rebounds, while Tayanna Jones finished with 15 points and five rebounds.  Taylor Barnes rounded out those in double figures with 11 points in the game.
  • On Sunday, the Blue & Gray fell 82-69 to the Fresno State Bulldogs.
  • Brianna Jones led the Blue & Gray with 19 points as the lone Hoya in double figures.
  • For her efforts, Jones was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. She averaged 17.5 ppg as well as 4.5 rpg and 2.0 spg for the Blue & Gray in California.
 
About the Lions
  • The Lions enter Friday on a three-game winning streak that began Nov. 17 with a 61-59 victory over reigning NEC champion Robert Morris.
  • Columbia went on to defeat Army on the road and most recently downed Milwaukee, 74-46 last Saturday.
  • Columbia is currently 4-3 on the season and led by first year guard Abbey Hsu who is averaging a team-high 12.9 ppg.
  • Friday will be Education Day with more than 2,000 New York City Department of Education students invited.
 
Columbia Series
  • The Hoyas are 2-0 all-time against the Lions but have never met in New York.
  • The last meeting was a 70-49 GU victory during the 2003 season.
  • The first time the teams played was on November 30, 1996 when the Blue & Gray prevailed by a score of 101-61.
 
About the Rams
  • Fordham is 3-5 on the season coming off of a trip to the Bahamas over Thanksgiving.
  • Fordham split its two contests down in Nassau, falling to No. 25 Arkansas on Friday, but rallying to defeat Lehigh at the buzzer, 59-57, on Saturday.
  • The Rams will face Manhattan on Thursday in the annual Battle of the Bronx.
  • FU was selected third in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll.
 
Fordham Series
  • The Hoyas are 6-4 all-time against the Rams and 1-2 in New York.
  • Last year, the squads battled in the District as Georgetown picked up the 58-38 victory.
  • The last meeting in the Bronx was during the 2007-08 campaign as the Blue & Gray won 89-43.
  • The series is one of GU's longest dating back to Georgetown's 1970-71 inaguaral season when the Hoyas downed the Rams 31-19 in D.C.
