WASHINGTON – Six Hoyas took to the pool on Friday for the third day of the Toyota U.S. Open. The USA Swimming-sponsored meet, held at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, serves as an opportunity to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, held in Omaha, Nebraska this summer.
DREW CARBONE
- Carbone, who already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials in the 100-meter backstroke last year, swam a qualifying time of 56.59 seconds in the prelims. His time tied for 23rd overall and he went on to win the three-person swim off in 55.97 seconds to advance to the C final.
- In the evening finals, he shaved off more time as he came away with a victory in the C final by nearly a half second as he touched the wall in 55.86 seconds.
CONNOR MORIKAWA
- Morikawa also advanced to the evening finals with his time of 1:05.25 in the 100-meter breaststroke.
- In the D final, Morikawa improved on his time as he touched the wall in 1:04.99 to place seventh, just missing the Olympic Trial time by less than two seconds.
BRETT SHERMAN
- Sherman swam in one of the first events of the day in the 400-meter freestyle. He placed 60th overall with a time of 4:00.93.
NATHANIEL GOLDFARB
- Goldfarb won his preliminary heat of the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:05.42, just missing out on the evening finals.
SAMANTHA KIM
- Kim touched the wall in 1:15.74 in her preliminary heat, placing 118th overall.
JOSIAH LAUVER
- Lauver placed 117th overall with a time of 1:59.31 in the prelims of the 200-meter freestyle.
COMING UP NEXT
The U.S. Open will wrap up competition on Saturday where four Hoyas will be in action.
Michael Wheeler will compete in the 1,500-meter freestyle before Carbone returns for the 200-meter backstroke. Kim and Morikawa will both race in the 200-meter breaststroke.
