WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's tennis team (2-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) picked up a commanding win over Longwood (3-1) on Thursday afternoon, winning the match 6-1.
Sofie Moenster (Oslo, Norway / Ordrup Gymnasium) clinched the match at 4-0 in the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-4 win over her opponent.
In doubles,
Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley High School) and partner
Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) gave GU the early advantage, blanking their opponents 6-0. At No. 3,
Anna Short (Birmingham, Mich. / Cranbrook Kingswood) and
Elena De Santis (Avellino, Italy / Convitto Nazionale P. Colletta) also made quick work of the Lancers and clinched the doubles point for the Hoyas with a 6-0 victory.
In singles action, Nakagawa only dropped one game against Marija Venta, winning the match with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 finish at No. 4. In the No. 3 spot, De Santis finished next also in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. With GU up 3-0 overall, Moenster clinched the Hoyas' second win of the 2019 campaign against Yulia Almiron at No. 1. Goodson finished out her match, defeating Jamie Breunig at No. 2 6-4, 6-1.
With the outcome decided, the final two matches were amended to pro sets. At No. 6,
Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md. / Holton Arms School) defeated her opponent 8-1 while Longwood picked up the final point against Short 8-5 for a total GU team score of 6-1.
The Hoyas return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 as they take on James Madison University at 1 p.m. in Harrisonburg at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
