WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University men's tennis team (3-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) defeated the Longwood Lancers (2-2) in a thrilling 4-3 comeback win on Thursday afternoon, winning four-straight matches to secure the victory.
Carlos Grande (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit) outlasted Rosen Naydenov 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 at No. 6 to secure the match-clinching point.
In doubles action, GU got out to an early advantage as
Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) and partner
Charlie Sharton (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) defeated their opponents at No. 2 6-4. The Lancers took the next match at No. 1 as
Connor Lee (San Marino, Calif. / San Marino) and
Rohan Kamdar (Singapore / Anglo Chinese School) fell to Guilheme Sergio and Amadeo Blasco in a close 7-6(2) battle. Longwood clinched the doubles point at No. 3, defeating the duo of
Andrew Rozanov (London, England / Westminster) and
Luke Ross (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) 7-6(10).
The Lancers picked up two-straight wins in singles to put them on top 3-0 but ultimately could not secure the final point. At No. 4, Rozanov put the Hoyas on the board with a win in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 over Julian Farthing. The win improves Rozanov's overall record to 4-1. Chen battled his opponent in a three-set duel and picked up another point, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3. With the Hoyas carrying momentum, Sharton edged Marc Casasnovas in straight sets at No. 5 6-4, 6-2. Tied at three all, Grande squared off with Naydenov in a three-set marathon at No. 6 and secured the victory for the Hoyas.
The Hoyas return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 16 to take on James Madison University at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
