WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Georgetown University baseball team rallied late, but dropped a 5-3 decision to Wake Forest University on Sunday afternoon. The game was played at Wake Forest's David F. Couch Ballpark. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 0-3 on the year, while the Demon Deacons move to 2-1.
Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla. / Venice) started on the mound and went just 4.0 innings. He allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out five.
Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) struck out one in 0.2 innings and
Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas / Trinity Christian Academy) retired the only batter he faced.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) had three of GU's four hits on the day and drove in a pair of runs.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) was on base twice with a pair of walks.
After Wake Forest took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Hoyas answered right back in the top of the second. McCabe led off with a double to left and, one batter later,
Alex Gamache (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest Academy) lined a double over the center fielder's head to switch places with McCabe and cut the deficit in the half, 2-1.
The Demon Deacons scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on two more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
The score remained the same until the top of the eighth.
James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa. / William Penn Charter School) reached on an error to lead off the inning and
Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) walked. They both moved up on a ground out and McCabe lined a two-out single into right to score both runners and close the gap to 5-3.
Georgetown could not put together a rally in the ninth inning as the 5-3 score stood final.
The Hoyas will return to North Carolina next weekend for a three-game series at Campbell University. First pitch in Friday's series opener is scheduled for 5 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday's contests will begin at 3 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
