WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team has hit the road to East Meadow, New York for the 2019 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships, presented by Jeep. The four-day meet, held Feb. 20-23, begins on Wednesday afternoon at the Nassau Aquatic Center. At last season's championships, the Hoya women finished second for the fifth-consecutive season while the GU men placed third. Over the four-day meet, Georgetown medaled 20 times in individual events, set a total of 13 new school records and won six gold medals. Sophomore
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) returns as the championship's Most Outstanding Male Swimmer. Last year he earned All-BIG EAST honors in four events including the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard backstroke where he won gold, and the 100-yard backstroke which he took silver.
Georgetown has three different divers competing this week who have each won the championship's Most Outstanding Diver over the past three years. On the men's side, senior
Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa. / Milton Hershey) was recognized in 2016 while on the women's team juniors
Margaret Barnhorst (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. / Ponte Vedra) and
Elizabeth Miller (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) earned the honor in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
Heading into this year's events, several Hoyas are among the BIG EAST leaders in their respective events. Freshmen
Brett Sherman (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and
Michael Wheeler (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo) hold the top two times in the 500-yard freestyle, while is Sherman also the leader in the 400-yard IM and Wheeler leads all BIG EAST swimmers in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Carbone enters the championships as the top seed in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard IM.
The 2019 BIG EAST Championships will consist of two sessions each day with preliminary heats each morning and finals in the evenings. Every session will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
