WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team completed the first day of the 2019 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships, presented by Jeep, on Wednesday evening. Racing at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, New York, the Hoya men sit in second place, while the GU women are in sixth.
On the men's side, Georgetown has 112 points to trail only Villanova (116). Seton Hall (88) is in third, followed by Xavier (74) and Providence (28). Villanova and Xavier are tied atop the women's standings with 74 points each. Seton Hall (64), Butler (56) and Providence (56) are also ahead of Georgetown (30).
The men's squad got off to a blazing start, winning the 800-yard freestyle relay in a record-setting time of 6:32.86. The quartet of
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic),
Michael Wheeler (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo),
Jacob Kohlhoff (Tega Clay, N.C. / Fort Mill) and
Brett Sherman (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) shattered the previous record by nearly three seconds. Carbone set the tone in the first leg, taking the lead from Villanova in his final 75 yards. Wheeler and Kohlhoff worked to open up the lead to two body lengths and Sherman cruised the final 200 yards for the record-setting victory.
The Hoyas tied for third in the 200-yard medley relay while, on the diving boards,
Matthew Werner (Elkins Park, Pa. / Cheltenham),
Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa. / Milton Hershey) and
Griffin Edmonds (Norwalk, Conn. / New Canaan) placed fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively.
Georgetown's women placed fourth in the 800-medley relay.
The second day of the BIG EAST Championships will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning with the prelims and the finals session starting at 6 p.m. Thursday's events will include the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, women's 3-meter diving and 200-yard freestyle relay.
