Hoyas Complete First Day of Action at BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – The Georgetown University track & field team competed at the 2019 BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships presented by Jeep on Friday, the first of the two-day event. The championship meet, held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, featured a day of preliminary heats, closing with a quartet of finals events on the track with both the men's and women's 5,000-meter run and distance medley relays (DMR). Through five events scored, the GU men are in sixth place, while the women's team is in eighth place through six events scored.

The GU men totaled 10 points with eight coming from a second-place showing in the DMR. The foursome of Jack Salisbury (Rumford, R.I. / La Salle Academy), Ethan Delgado (El Paso, Texas / El Dorado), Maazin Ahmad (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schenectady) and Jack Van Scoter (Pasadena, Calif. / Flintridge Prep) clocked 9:52.55 to finish behind Villanova. Rounding out the Hoya scoring was Matthew Bouthillette (North Providence, R.I. / La Salle Academy) in the 5,000-meter run where he took seventh overall crossing the line with a time of 14:37.53.

On the women's side, the Blue & Gray looked to the youth of Eni Akinniyi (Denton, Texas / John H. Guyer), who managed to score for Georgetown in the long jump with a mark of 5.20m, good enough for eight place.

The Hoyas are in good position for Saturday's finals with a slew of athletes qualifying in a range of events. Georgetown tallied 26 spots in Saturday's finals from Friday's prelims, with 16 coming from the men's quad and 10 spots coming from the women. The lanes will be littered with jerseys donning the Blue & Gray with a quartet of Hoyas in the 200-meter dash, an eight-person final, a foursome in the men's 800-meter finals and a trio of GU runners in the men's mile, both finals featuring a dozen competitors.

On the women's side, a balance of sprints and distance has the Blue & Gray in a prime spot to capture points, including a trio in the women's mile and a pair in the 800-meter run. The Hoyas earned a duo of spots in the 60-meter dash as well.

Georgetown returns to action on Saturday with the final day of the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships. The women's 3,000-meter run is the first race on the track and scheduled for 11:20 a.m. The meet will be covered live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Matthew Schumacker calling the action.
