WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team broke seven program records and claimed two gold medals on the third day of the 2019 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships, presented by Jeep, on Thursday. With just one day and 13 total events remaining, the Hoya men continue to hold a slight lead to first place while the GU women sit in third. Racing took place at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, New York.
On the men's side, Georgetown has 522 points, maintaining a slim advantage over Xavier (500.5). Seton Hall (451) sits in third ahead of Villanova (434.5) and Providence (179). The GU women have 390.5 points, trailing Villanova (671.5) and Xavier (449). Seton Hall (293), Butler (159) and Providence (156) round out the standings.
Brett Sherman (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) got the men off to a strong start, claiming a silver medal in the 400-yard IM. He touched the wall in 3:54.06 to break the Georgetown record by more than a second.
Jacob Kohlhoff (Tega Clay, N.C. / Fort Mill) won a tight race to take home a gold medal in the 200-yard freestyle. He finished in 1:38.45, less than half a second ahead of his opponent from Seton Hall.
Michael Wheeler (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo) was right behind in third.
Nathaniel Goldfarb (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) recorded a time of 55.21 seconds in the morning prelims of the 100-yard breaststroke, not only breaking the program record by more than a second, but also giving him the second seed in the evening finals. He continued to re-break his own record in the A Final, touching the wall in 55.06 seconds to claim bronze.
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) broke his own 100-yard backstroke record in the morning prelims, clocking in at 48.22 seconds. In the evening finals, he won his third gold of the championships with a time of 48.27 seconds as he outstretched his two opponents from Xavier by just .07 and .19 seconds, respectively.
The quartet of Carbone, Goldfarb,
Justin Summers (Weston, Conn. / Weston) and Kohlhoff smashed the school record in the 400-yard medley relay, recording a time of 3:17.14 to best the previous mark by more than three seconds and finish second. Carbone swam the opening backstroke leg and reset his 100-yard record from earlier in the day with a split of 47.87 seconds.
On the diving boards,
Griffin Edmonds (Norwalk, Conn. / New Canaan) earned bronze with a score of 504.20, while
Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa. / Milton Hershey) and
Matthew Werner (Elkins Park, Pa. / Cheltenham) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Hoya women picked up valuable points in the 100-yard butterfly as
Laine Morgan (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades School) tied for fourth place, while
Lauren Henasey (Newtown, Pa. / Germantown Academic) and
Gabriella Meringolo (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
In the 100-yard backstroke,
Grace Chen (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport) stormed back over the final 50 yards to touch the wall in a Georgetown-record 55.05 seconds and claim silver.
The quartet of Chen,
Megan Smith (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset), Morgan and
Belinda Donohoe (Cambridge, Mass. / Concord Carlisle) finished third in the 400-yard medley relay to close out the night.
The fourth and final day of the BIG EAST Championships will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with the prelims, and the finals session starting at 6 p.m. Saturday's events will include the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, women's 1-meter diving, 400-yard freestyle relay.
