WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Drexel on Saturday afternoon in a close battle. With the loss, the Hoyas slip to 2-6 and the Dragons improve to 7-4.
In doubles, the Dragons took an early lead defeating
Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md. / Holton Arms School) and partner
Sofie Moenster (Oslo, Norway / Ordrup Gymnasium) 6-4 at No. 2. At No. 3, the duo of
Elena De Santis (Avellino, Italy / Convitto Nazionale P. Colletta) and
Anna Short (Birmingham, Mich. / Cranbrook Kingswood) evened the contest with a 6-3 victory over Marta Martinez and Katka Majorova.
Drexel secured the doubles point at No. 1 defeating
Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley High School) and
Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) 6-3.
In singles, Nakagawa put the Hoyas on the board with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win over her opponent at No. 4. The Dragons took the next two points winning at No. 5 and No. 6 against Short and Lynham, respectively.
The Hoyas won the next two matches as De Santis defeated Majorova in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Goodson picked up her sixth win of the 2019 campaign over Ghita Benhadi 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2.
With the contest tied at 3 all, Salma Ziouta defeated Moenster 7-5, 7-6(1) at No. 1 to secure the victory for the Dragons.
The Hoyas are back in action on Friday, March 1 to take on Seton Hall in a BIG EAST matchup. The contest is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Yates Field House.
