Campbell Pushes Past Baseball

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell scored four runs in the late innings to defeat the Georgetown University baseball team 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 0-6 on the season while Campbell moves to 5-2.

Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) led the offense with three hits, including a double. Tony Barreca (Long Grove, Iowa / North Scott) was on base three times with two hits and two RBIs and John Simourian (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) added a double and two walks. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) had a pair of hits and both Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) reached base twice.

Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) started on the mound and went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on eight hits and six walks. He struck out five. Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) struck out a pair in 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Campbell jumped out to a 2-0 lead with singles runs in each of the first two innings.

The Hoyas had runners on in each of the first three innings, but couldn't score. They rallied in the fourth inning as the first six batters reached safely. A bunt single and double put two runners in scoring position before a single by Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) drove in the first run. An error loaded the bases and Weisenberg was then hit by a pitch to force home the tying run. Barreca followed with a two-run single to give GU the 4-2 lead.

The Camels immediately tied it with two runs in the bottom of the inning and then retook the lead with a run in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth inning, McCabe drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game 5-5 as Barreca crossed the plate after doubling earlier in the frame.

Campbell scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings off of Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) to take the 9-5 lead. Georgetown put two runners on the in top of the ninth, but could not rally any further.

The Hoyas will return to the DMV for a midweek game against George Washington. First pitch against the Colonials is set for 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia. The Blue & Gray will then depart on its 10-day, eight-game spring break trip to Florida.
