WASHINGTON – For the third time this season, Georgetown University guard
James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Akinjo led the Hoyas is scoring, assists and steals on a 1-1 week for the Blue & Gray. He opened the week with 23 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists in a home victory over Xavier, scoring all 23 points in the second half. Akinjo added a team-high 19 points to go with four assists and two rebounds in a road loss at No. 14/14 Villanova.
For the season, Akinjo leads all BIG EAST freshmen in scoring with 14.1 points per game and is second among all players with 5.2 assists a contest.
The Hoyas next hit the road to face Providence on Wednesday, Feb. 6. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Dunkin' Donuts Center and can be seen live on FS1. The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 and on SiriusXM with Rich Chvotkin calling the action.
