WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's basketball team (14-8, 4-5 BIG EAST) looks to complete a regular season sweep against Providence College (13-9, 3-6 BIG EAST) as it takes on the Friars on Wednesday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Hoyas claimed a double-overtime victory over PC in the first meeting in the District in January.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game can be seen live on FS1 with Dave O'Brien calling the play-by-play and Donny Marshall providing analysis. Fans can listen locally on WOL 1450 and on SiriusXM channel 383 with Rich Chvotkin calling the action.
Georgetown is coming off a 77-65 setback at then-No. 14/14 Villanova on Sunday afternoon.
James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) led three Hoyas in double figures as he tallied 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting.
Trey Mourning (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades) followed up with 12 points while
Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C. / Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) chipped in 10.
Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) led the squad with eight rebounds while Akinjo dished out a quartet of helpers to lead the team.
Akinjo was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the third time this season. Along with his 19 points against the Wildcats, he added 23 points to go with five rebounds, five steals and four assists in a victory over Xavier.
Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) continues to pace Georgetown with 18.5 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game, ranking fourth and third in the BIG EAST, respectively. Akinjo and
Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) both average double figures with 14.1 and 13.2 ppg. LeBlanc is just off the double-digit mark with 9.6 ppg and is second on GU in rebounding with 7.5 boards a contest. Akinjo is second in the BIG EAST with 115 assists on the season.
In the first meeting between the two teams, McClung nailed a buzzer-beating three to send the game to overtime while Akinjo also drained his 3-pointer to send the game to its second overtime where the Hoyas prevailed over the visiting Friars 96-90. Govan led all scorers with a career-high 33 points on 11-of-26 shooting and an 8-for-11 effort at the free throw line. He recorded his sixth double-double of the season as he grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds and totaled four blocks in the contest. Akinjo was second on the team in scoring with 20 points and McClung rounded out those in double figures with 16. LeBlanc grabbed double-digit boards as he pulled down 11 and added four blocks in the effort. Akinjo paced the offense with nine assists.
Providence has dropped back-to-back road games at Seton Hall and DePaul. Three Friars average double figures in scoring, led by Alpha Diallo with 17.1 ppg. A.J. Reeves and Nate Watson add 12.1 and 10.8 ppg, respectively. Diallo also paces PC on the boards with 8.1 rpg and averages 3.3 apg to top the squad.
Following Wednesday's game, the Hoyas return home to host Butler on Saturday. Tipoff against the Bulldogs is scheduled for noon.
