WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University men's tennis team (1-3, 0-2 BIG EAST) clinched its first win of the 2019 season against District neighbor George Washington on Friday morning. The 4-3 victory was decided in the doubles point, as the singles matchup went deadlocked at three apiece.
The Hoyas got out to an early lead, winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 in doubles action.
Rohan Kamdar (Singapore / Anglo Chinese School) and partner
Connor Lee (San Marino, Calif. / San Marino) defeated Zeng and Barnett 7-5 at No. 1 while
Charlie Sharton (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) and
Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) picked up a commanding 6-1 victory at No. 2.
In singles action, Lee defeated Navarro in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 while Chen also made quick work of his opponent with a win at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1.
Andrew Rozanov (London, England / Westminster) battled to three sets against Sciglitano and won the second 6-1, but ultimately dropped the match 3-6, 6-1, 4-6. At No. 5,
Luke Ross (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) clinched the third singles victory in the tiebreak on the second set 6-4, 7-6(7).
This is the second year in a row that the Hoyas have defeated the Colonials. Last season GU won 4-1 after the Colonials had won the previous 12 matchups.
The Hoyas will return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 10 as they take on BIG EAST opponent, Xavier at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland. The match is scheduled for 9 a.m.
