Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Princeton

BETHESDA, Md. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla. / Venice) struck out 11 in 6.2 innings to lead the Georgetown University baseball team to a 9-6 victory in game two as the Hoyas split a doubleheader with Princeton on Saturday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. The Tigers won the first game 5-0 in seven innings. With the split, the Hoyas move to 5-14 on the season, while the Tigers are now 3-7.

Game One: Princeton 5, Georgetown 0 (7 innings)
Georgetown only had three hits and Princeton took advantage of 14 walks to win game one, which was scheduled for only seven innings.

Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) started and went just 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on one hit and seven walks. Miller Freeman (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell Academy) saved the bullpen with 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just two runs on five hits and five walks with one strikeout.

Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Conn.), Yareb Martinez (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) and Nolan Matsko (Baltimore, Md. / Dulaney) had GU's three hits on the afternoon. Matsko's seventh-inning, pinch-hit single was the first of his career.

Game Two: Georgetown 9, Princeton 6
Georgetown earned the doubleheader split behind Killam's 11 strikeouts and an 11-hit attack.

Killam went 6.2 innings, allowing five runs, just two earned, on five hits and three walks. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the second-consecutive game. Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) came on in a three-run game and earned his second save of the season. In 2.1 innings of relief, he allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out two.

Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) led the offense with three hits and was one of four Hoyas with two runs scored. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School), Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) and Tony Barreca (Long Grove, Iowa / North Scott) all had two hits apiece, while Barreca and McCabe led the way with two RBIs each.

After Princeton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Hoyas answered right back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) reached via a walk and eventually came around to score when Achecar reached on an infield single and the throw was wild.

The offense broke out for five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Ruedisili and Davis each doubled, putting runners on second and third. McCabe hit a grounder to short, but Davis beat the throw to third as Ruedisili scored. Achecar singled in Davis and, after another single loaded the bases, McCabe crossed the plate on a double play ball. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) walked and stole second before Barreca hit a two-run single into left field to give GU a 6-1 advantage.

Princeton scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3, but Georgetown responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ruedisili again started it with a walk. He promptly stole second and went to third on a fly out by Davis. He scored on a sacrifice fly by McCabe. Achecar restarted the rally with a walk and another stolen base before coming around to score on a double by Willis over the right fielder's head, pushing the lead to 8-3.

The Tigers scored two more runs in the seventh, but Weisenberg had the answer in the bottom half of the inning. He led off with a double to center. Barreca lifted a fly ball to center and Weisenberg broke for third. The relay throw went into the third base dugout, allowing Weisenberg to continue home to give GU the 9-5 lead.

Princeton scored an unearned run in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, but Grzebinski got a strikeout and a popup to end the game.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at Shirley Povich Field. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
