WASHINGTON – Select members of the Georgetown University track & field team were in Boston this weekend as they competed in the IC4A/ECAC Championships, hosted by Boston University. The weekend was highlighted by a championship performance in the men's 4x800-meter relay.
The quartet of runners made up of
Ethan Delgado (El Paso, Texas / El Dorado),
Ian Delgado (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope),
Brennan Munley (Clarkson, Mich. / Waterford Mott) and
Joshua Bell (Nashville, Tenn. / Brentwood Academy) came across the line first in a time of 7:27.69 in the 4x800-meter relay. Bell, who ran the anchor leg, had the fastest time of the four, finishing strong at 1:50.73.
Other notable performances included freshman
D'Andre Barriffe (Jamaica, N.Y. / Bishop Loughlin Memorial), who qualified for the finals in the men's 200-meter dash in a time of 21.80. Barriffe would go on to finish 11th overall in the event. On the women's side, sophomore
Lexi Del Gizzo (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) ran a season's best time in the women's 800-meter preliminaries, posting a mark of 2:10.73.
"The ECAC/IC4A meet is a great opportunity to give our team another chance to compete," Associate Head Coach
Alton McKenzie said. "Our men's 4x800 team ran an exceptional race in securing the win. They all ran smart in what was a very competitive race and had a great anchor leg by Josh for the win. Though we didn't have finalists on the women's side, we had some performances that should bode well for what's to follow come outdoors. The experience gained should help as we transition to the outdoor season with the majority of the team."
Four runners on the men's team have qualified for two events at the NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Alabama Birmingham, starting Friday, March 8. The Hoyas will have a quartet of runners in the distance medley relay (DMR) and one competitor in the 800-meter run. The rest of the squad will begin the outdoor track & field season at the Penn Challenge on Saturday, March 23 in Philadelphia.
