PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. –
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) struck out a career-high 16 batters, but the Georgetown University baseball team fell 3-2 to Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday evening at North Charlotte Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 2-9 on the season, while the Mount moves to 4-4.
Cushing struck out 16 in 7.0 innings of work. He allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits while not walking anyone.
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
John Simourian (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) had two hits to lead the offense and was on base three times with a walk.
Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) was also on base three times, including a single, and
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) walked twice.
Cushing was cruising right from the start. After an error to lead off the game, he struck out the next six batters. He also struck out the side again in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. Overall, Cushing had at least one strikeout in all seven innings, and two or more strikeouts in four different frames.
The Hoyas finally broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth. Simourian led off with a single, went to second on a bunt and third on a ground out. With two outs, McCabe reached on an infield single as Simourian crossed the plate to give GU a 1-0 lead.
Mount St. Mary's answered right back with three runs, one earned, in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Willis was hit by a pitch to lead things off and Freddy Achecar (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) lined a double of the right field fence, missing a home run by just a few feet, to put two runners in scoring position.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score one run, but the Hoyas could not get the tying run in from third with less than two out.
Georgetown put runners on base in each of its final two at bats but could not even the score, falling 3-2.
The Hoyas will be right back in action on Wednesday when they take on Western Michigan at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. First pitch is scheduled for noon and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
