PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Georgetown University baseball team did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, but a crucial error led to a 6-2 loss to Kansas on Saturday evening at North Charlotte Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 2-12 on the season, while the Jayhawks improve to 10-3.
Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla. / Venice) started on the mound and did not give up a hit over 5.2 innings. He struck out a career-high 13 batters.
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas / Trinity Christian Academy) threw a scoreless inning.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) was on base three times to lead the Hoyas, reaching on a single and two walks.
Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) singled twice.
Killam was on his game from the start, striking out at least one batter through each of the five innings. He struck out two in the first and three in the fourth as he retired the first 12 batters he faced. Kansas put its leadoff batter on in the fifth inning with a hit by pitch, but Killam struck out the next three batters to end frame.
The Hoyas had their chances early, putting two runners on base in each the first and third innings, and loading the bases in the fifth, but could not break the scoreless deadlock.
In the top of the sixth,
Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) drew a leadoff walk.
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) followed with a two-strike blast over the right field fence for his third home run of the season, giving GU a 2-0 lead.
Killam struck out the first two batters of the bottom half of the sixth, but then three-straight walks loaded the bases. A high pop-up on the infield was dropped as all three runners came around to score. A double, Kansas' first hit of the game, scored another run to give the Jayhawks a 4-2 lead.
Kansas added two runs on three hits in the seventh to extend its advantage to 6-2.
Georgetown could not rally in its final two at-bats as the 6-2 score stood final.
