WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University track & field teams stayed local on Saturday as they competed in the George Mason Spring Invitational, hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Virginia. The day was highlighted by a pair of victories from All-Americans
Joe White (Clifton, N.J. / DePaul Catholic) and
Spencer Brown (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and a third-place finish from freshman
Eni Akinniyi (Denton, Texas / John H. Guyer).
Men's Recap
In the 400-meter dash, White and fellow All-American
Ruach Padhal (London, Ontario / John Paul II Catholic) turned in impressive times with White coming across the line first recording a 47.60 while Padhal broke his personal record with a mark of 48.32. Brown was featured in the 800-meter run alongside six other members from Georgetown and posted a solid first-place performance with a time of 1:49.12. Brown was one of three Hoyas to finish below the 1:50 mark. The last event of the day for the men was the 1,500-meter run and freshman
Maazin Ahmed (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schenectady) finished in eighth place recording a time of 3:52.04.
"Overall, we had some very strong performances with Joe winning the 400m in 47.60 in his season opener," Associate Head Coach
Alton McKenzie said. "I also thought Ruach ran an exceptional race in the 400m to finish third overall and run a personal best of 48.32. This should set both of them up well for great 800s later this season. We also showed great depth having three men under 1:50, led by Spencer's 1:49.12 for the win in the 800m. We're excited to see what's in store for the rest of this season based on these performances."
Women's Recap
On the women's side, Akinniyi turned in one of the best performances of the day for the Hoyas, as she was able to post a jump of 11.72 meters to take third in the triple jump. Sophomore
Vickie Milledge (Simsbury, Conn. / Simsbury) came in ninth place in the women's 100-meter hurdles while sophomore
BryAnn Sandy (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Paul Robeson-Pathways Tech) finished in fourth place with a time of 1:03.91 in the 400-meter hurdles.
"We had some promise of what's to come from Eni who seems to be rounding into form," McKenzie continued. "She finished third in the triple jump, jumping 11.72m on her first jump. Some big jumps were left on the runway with close fouls, so I'm looking forward to when she's able to put it all together."
Georgetown will return to the track on Thursday, April 18 to begin a pair of meets at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California and the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, California.
