WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's tennis team (3-15, 1-6 BIG EAST) fell 5-2 to Marquette on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST matchup. Seniors
Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula),
Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) and
Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md. / Holton Arms School) were honored in a prematch ceremony as it was the team's last regular season home game.
Marquette (12-9, 4-2 BIG EAST) got out to the early start, winning two doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the team point.
In singles, Goodson tallied the first Hoya point after an overall 2-0 team deficit to put the Blue & Gray on the board. The senior defeated Natalija Popovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, which marks her fourth BIG EAST win of the season. At No. 4, Nakagawa battled her opponent to three sets and picked up the second team win of the day winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
With the Golden Eagles leading 3-2, Lesley Foe clinched the match against
Anna Short (Birmingham, Mich. / Cranbrook Kinswood) 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5.
The BIG EAST tournament starts on Thursday, April 18 in Cayce, South Carolina at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center. Match times and results will be posted on GUHoyas.com.
