Softball Drops a Pair Against Wildcats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team tallied a pair of losses in a doubleheader against the Villanova Wildcats at Nats Youth Academy on Thursday. The Hoyas fell to the Wildcats 10-2 in game one and then lost 9-6 in extra innings in game two. With the pair of losses, GU drops to 11-30 on the season and 4-8 in the BIG EAST while 'Nova advances to 23-20 overall and 6-5 in the league.

Junior Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) led the day for the Blue & Gray with three hits, one run, a homer and three RBIs as well as a 1.000 slugging percentage. Sophomores Macy Cartwright (Naples, Fla. / Naples) and Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda) also had three hits on the day. Cartwright scored two runs for GU and went 3 for 3 in stolen bases. Senior Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough) and freshman Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia) also recorded home runs, marking Forshey's first collegiate homer.

In the circle for game one, junior Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas / St. John's School) got the nod. Pacha pitched a single inning and allowed a pair of runs off of a pair of hits, walked two and struck out one. Sophomore London Diller (Sugar Land, Texas / George Ranch) took over in the second inning and threw 4.2 innings. The sophomore gave up eight runs off of four hits, walked three and struck out one. Junior Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) finished the game and allowed just one hit.

The Wildcats started the scoring early with a 2-0 lead before the Hoyas had their first at-bat. 'Nova scored two runs with bases loaded and a hit to deep left field. Georgetown answered in the bottom of the first as Cartwright used her speed to reach each base. Cartwright led off the Blue & Gray with a bunt toward first and beat the throw, going on to steal second and third in the next two at-bats for GU. As Forshey flied out to left field, Cartwright advanced on the throw to make it 2-1.

Villanova scored another run in the top of the second with a home run, making it 3-1. Georgetown tallied its final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Forshey led off the inning and knocked one over the fence in left field to make it a one-run game.

The Hoyas held Villanova from scoring in the fifth, but eventually the team gave up seven runs in the top of the sixth as GU fell 10-2 in six innings.

In game two, junior Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va. / James Madison HS) started in the circle. She went 2.0 innings and allowed five runs off of five hits. Freshman Cassie Henning (Atlanta, Ga. / Wesleyan) pitched the last 6.0 innings and gave up four runs off of seven hits, walked three and struck out one.

Villanova took an early lead again in the top of the first inning off of a one-run sacrifice hit. The Hoyas struggled to get the bats going as the Wildcats went on to score four more runs in the top of the second off of a double and back-to-back homers, leading 5-0.

Holiday got the scoring started for GU in the bottom of the fourth with a home run out of left field. The Blue & Gray found an offensive spark in the next inning and took a 6-5 lead. With Henning on base from a walk, Amen followed up next in the order and blasted a home run over the fence in center field, making it 5-3. Cartwright marked the top of the order and reached base with a single down the middle and advanced to second when junior Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) performed a flawless bunt and beat the throw to first. With only one out, Forshey walked and loaded the bases and Holiday then moved the runners with a single to center field, bringing in a pair of runs to tie it at five. Jones finished off the inning with a bunt and scored Forshey from third to give the Hoyas a 6-5 lead.

'Nova responded with a one-run double to the outfield in the top of the sixth to tie it up again 6-6. Neither team could score the game winner in the seventh, forcing extra innings. Villanova managed to take a 9-6 lead in the top of the eighth off of three hits while the Hoyas struggled to fight back and dropped a 9-6 decision.

The Blue & Gray will close out the series against Villanova on Friday at Nats Youth Academy. The squads will play a single game at noon. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
