Hoya Heavyweights Compete Against Saint Joseph’s and Temple; Lightweights Fall to Yale

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's rowing teams headed north for a pair of races against Saint Joseph's and Yale on Saturday. The heavyweights took on the Hawks on the Schuylkill River while the lightweights took on the Bulldogs on the Housatonic River.

Heavyweight Recap
The third varsity boats hit the water first and Georgetown was unable to fend off Saint Joseph's finishing in 6:16.5. The Hoyas were able to tally a victory in the second varsity race posting a time of 5:56.8. The winning boat was comprised of Persis Moore (Boca Raton, Fla.) as coxswain, followed by Owen O'Brien Powers (Portland, Ore.), Tripp Cave (Dallas, Texas), Gavin Lafferty (Jenkintown, Pa.), Vincent Zhu (Orlando, Fla.), Joe O'Brien (Havertown, Pa.), Zach Lee (Chelsea, Mich.), Thomas Kolnik (Sewell, N.J.) and Blake Sassaman (Winnetka, Ill.) The first varsity squads then went toe-to-toe and the Hawks pulled away in the final meters, edging Georgetown by four seconds.

Against Temple, all three varsity boats posted strong showings. The third varsity crossed the line first in a time of 6:05.97 while the second varsity recorded its second victory of the day finishing in 5:54.78. In the last race of the day, Georgetown dominated the first varsity matchup beating Temple by 10 seconds in a time of 5:44.81.

"Really good day from the 3V and 2V," Head Coach Luke Agnini said. "The 2V came up with a pair of wins and they are showing that a few of them are ready to contend for a seat in the varsity. The 3V has been fantastic with all of the lineup changes they have endured. It's a great testament that hard work and your best effort is the solution to so many problems, so I'm really proud of that group. The varsity, unfortunately, had a flat first race. Hopefully it was a good wake up call and reminder that side by side rowing is a dogfight and can't be treated like a time trial. They went in the right direction for the second race."

Lightweight Recap
Against Yale, the third varsity crews led things off. The Bulldogs took control from the start, but Georgetown was unable to overcome the distance. The second varsity squads faced off later in the morning and the Hoyas fell to Yale finishing in 5:53.0. Rounding out the day was the battle against the first varsity squads and the Bulldogs were able to complete the sweep beating the Blue & Gray by seven seconds.

Following Saturday's race, the Hoya lightweights will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Ridgefield, New Jersey on Sunday, April 7 for races against Harvard and Columbia. The heavyweights return to the water on Friday, April 12 as they take on George Washington University on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
