NEW YORK – The Georgetown University track & field team completed day one of the 2019 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Jeep on Friday, the first of the two-day event. The championship meet, held at Icahn Stadium in Randall's Island, New York, featured a day of preliminary heats, closing with a quartet of finals events on the track with both the men's and women's steeplechase and the 10,000-meter run. Through seven events scored, the GU men are in fourth place, while the women's team sits in fifth place through six events scored.
The GU men totaled 27 points with a combined 14 points coming from the steeplechase and 12 in the 10,000-meter run.
Christian Liddell (Rogers, Ark. / Rogers) ran a stellar steeplechase race leading the entire way to earn 10 points. He recorded a personal best 8:46.09 en route to the victory. Freshman
Price Owens (Yorktown, Va. / Grafton) finished in fifth place receiving four points. Rounding out the scoring for the men were
Jack Van Scoter (Pasadena, Calif. / Flintridge Prep) and
Dylan Scarsone (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) in the 10,000-meter run where Van Scoter took second overall crossing the line with a time of 30:50.08 for eight points. Scarsone placed fifth to give the Hoyas four additional points. Van Scoter led the majority of the race before getting overtaken in the final laps, but was able to maintain a good pace to finish second. In the field,
Josiah Laney (Sylmar, Calif. / Granada Hills) scored one point in the men's long jump.
On the women's side,
Madeline Perez (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Glenbard West) finished in second place in a time of 36:13.05 in the 10,000-meter run to earn eight points for Georgetown. Perez propelled herself to the lead pack early on and was able to stay in second position throughout the race. The duo of
Katie Dammer (Clarks Summit, Pa. / Abington Heights) and
Katherine Modrall (Carmel, Ind. / Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory) came in fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the steeplechase to score seven points between the two to give the Hoyas a point total of 15 after day one.
The Hoyas are in good position for Saturday's finals with multiple athletes qualifying in a range of events. Georgetown tallied 20 spots in Saturday's finals from Friday's prelims, with 12 coming from the men's squad and eight spots coming from the women. Events to watch for include the men's 400-meter dash, as well as the 800 and 1,500-meter runs. All-American
Ruach Padhal (London, Ontario / John Paul II Catholic) will represent Georgetown in the 400-meter dash. A quartet of Hoyas will face off in the eight-person 800-meter final, including All-American
Joe White (Clifton, N.J. / DePaul Catholic) who is seeking his fourth title in the event. In the 1,500-meter race, a trio of runners wearing the Blue & Gray will battle it out against a talented field all vying for a title.
On the women's side, a balance of sprints and distance has the Blue & Gray in a prime spot to capture points, including a trio in the 800-meter run.
Josette Norris (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) will look to continue her impressive outdoor season in the 1,500-meter run. The Hoyas also earned a lone spot in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles.
Georgetown returns to action on Saturday with the final day of the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The women's 4x100-meter relay is the first race on the track and is scheduled for noon with the men's 4x100-meter relay commencing at 12:06 p.m. Day two will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
