WASHINGTON – Georgetown University swimming & diving rising junior
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass./Central Catholic) has been named a College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American Honorable Mention, as announced by the organization earlier this month. It is Carbone's second Scholar All-American selection in as many years.
Carbone had a monster sophomore season, earning the BIG EAST Championships' Most Outstanding Swimmer for the second-consecutive season. He earned All-BIG EAST honors in seven different events, including winning gold medals in both backstroke events, the 200-yard IM and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Carbone broke three individual program records, including the 200-yard backstroke twice, at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships, and helped the Hoyas break three more records in relay events. In December, Carbone qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in both the 100- and 200-meter backstroke at the U.S. Winter National Championships.
The CSCAA recognized 1,221 swimmers and divers to the Scholar All-American First Team from 190 colleges and universities across all divisions for the 2018-19 season. The award honors students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and competed at their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Carbone was one of 890 additional student-athletes who were named as Honorable Mention selections. These students have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at an NCAA Regional or Zone Diving qualifier. In total, 282 teams placed at least one individual on the First or Second teams.
Georgetown's men's and women's programs were tabbed as CSCAA Scholar All-America teams last month. The Hoya men recorded a spring GPA of 3.55 to rank fourth among 106 Division I men's programs while the women's squad turned in a 3.60 GPA over the spring semester to place among the top 20 percent of 184 Division I women's programs.
The Georgetown men finished second at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships, while the women placed third. The Hoyas won six gold medals overall and set 15 program records. Georgetown had a league-high 24 student-athletes earn All-BIG EAST honors with 13 women receiving all-conference recognition in 17 events, while the men's squad saw 11 student-athletes earn accolades in 32 events.
