WASHINGTON – The No. 7 Georgetown University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon in its home opener against No. 21 North Carolina State 3-1. The Hoyas took the 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Wolfpack came back with three-straight goals to come out on top. With the loss, GU falls to 1-1-0 while NC State improves to 1-1-0.
"It was a game that turned in moments," said Head Coach Dave Nolan. "We got lucky with our goal in the first half, but then we fell asleep and got ourselves in trouble. I thought we were managing the game quite well in the beginning, but then NC State got a little lucky in the second half with their second goal and their third goal was a bad mistake by us. I don't think we played well enough, which was disappointing to me. We need to change our approach for Wednesday's game at Duke and see if we can learn from our mistakes and handle these moments a little better."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Graduate student Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J. / Central Regional) scored the first goal in the 34th minute to give GU the 1-0 lead. Carolan found her opportunity on a deflection of the ball inside the box to score her second goal in two games.
Shortly after Carolan's goal, NC State was awarded a penalty kick and made it even at one before heading into the second half.
The Wolfpack took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute when Tziarra King connected a pass inside the box to get past freshman goalkeeper Anna Leat (Auckland, New Zealand / Rangitoto College).
In the 71st minute, King replicated the same play from her first goal of the game to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Wolfpack.
OF NOTE
The Blue & Gray outshot NC State 11-10 and took seven corner kicks to the Wolfpack's five. Senior Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda-Chevy Chase) led the squad by taking five shots.
Shortly after NC State's second goal in the second half, senior Carson Nizialek (Chantilly, Va. / Freedom) and Germino-Watnick had good opportunities to tie it up but both shots went just above the net.
Leat recorded three saves in the net. She played all 90 minutes for the Hoyas at goal.
