WASHINGTON – After its most successful season in program history, the Georgetown University women's soccer team will kick off the 2019 campaign ranked No. 7 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, announced Tuesday by the organization. The Hoyas finished last season with a No. 4-ranking after receiving a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Defending national champions Florida State sit atop the poll, followed by North Carolina, who GU fell to in the semifinals in the College Cup, with Stanford in the third spot. UCLA and Southern California round out the top five, while Penn State received a No. 6-ranking. Duke, Virginia and Tennessee follow behind Georgetown to make up the top 10.
The Blue & Gray is the only school in the BIG EAST to receive a national ranking by the United Soccer Coaches.
Last season, the Hoyas finished with an overall record of 21-1-3, the most wins in program history, and reached the College Cup for the second time in three years. Georgetown three-peated the BIG EAST Championship and won back-to-back BIG EAST regular season titles. In addition to the team's accolades, Nolan and his staff were named the United Soccer Coaches National Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Hoyas will open the 2019 season on August 22 at James Madison at 7 p.m.
