WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's tennis team opened the season in the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic Tennis Championships at JTCC in College Park, Maryland this past weekend. The Hoyas boasted a number of impressive performances to begin the 2019-20 campaign.
Highlights
- Junior Sophie Moenster had a solid weekend advancing to the finals of the French Open Singles Draw, she got there by defeating Dessi Zlateva of Richmond 7-6 (5), 6-2
- Moenster won two matches prior with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the opening round and a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Du Lin Robertson of Loyola to follow.
- Sophomore Brooke Murphy advanced to the semifinals in the US Open Singles Draw defeating Schulyer Tose of Towson 6-2, 6-2.
- In the Australian Open Singles Draw freshman Agata Mikos won a pair of matches to move to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 0-6, 10-5 battle over Alexa Martinez from Towson and a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Chloe Hamlin from Maryland.
- Senior Anna Short also won a match downing Loyola's Brooke Santoriello in a tough 7-6 (5), 6-2 win.
- In the Old Bay Doubles Draw, the pair of Moenster and Mikos appeared in the semifinals after a first-round bye and a win over a duo from Maryland by a score of 7-5.
- In the Crab Cake Doubles Draw, the duo of Ashton and Short won a first round match 6-1 over a pair from Loyola.
This marked the third-consecutive season that the women have begun the season at the Bedford Cup.
