WASHINGTON – Sophomore Jenna Royson was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league. She led the No. 12 Georgetown women's soccer team to a 7-0 emphatic victory over Ohio to close out nonconference play. Senior Paula Germino-Watnick was named to the Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts in the win as well.
Royson led a defense that allowed Ohio to take four shots on Friday at Shaw Field and held the Bobcats to just one corner kick in 90 minutes of play. She was in on the scoring as well, notching her third goal of the season in the 13th minute to give the Blue & Gray an early 2-0 lead.
This is the second week in a row that Royson was recognized by the BIG EAST and her first time receiving Player of the Week honors.
Germino-Watnick led GU on Friday with five points off of a pair of goals and an assist. The forward took a corner kick in the fifth minute that found sophomore Charlie Kern inside the box for the first goal of the game. Germino-Watnick also capped the scoring for the Hoyas in the second half with both goals coming from her.
This is Germino-Watnicks's second nod to weekly honors this season and Georgetown's fifth-straight week receiving weekly honors.
The Blue & Gray will open up BIG EAST play on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Shaw Field against Marquette. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and will be aired live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). Live stats will also be available at GUHoyas.com.
