No. 12 Hoyas Blank Marquette in BIG EAST Opener

WASHINGTON – The No. 12 Georgetown women's soccer team defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Blue & Gray dominated from the opening whistle in both squads' BIG EAST Conference opener. With the win, GU advances to 7-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-7-0 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST play.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
"I thought we did a good job today taking care of a win at home. Marquette has had some good results this year and beat good opponents. Every year when we play them, it's always a fight. Today was a tough battle but I thought our kids really responded. Carson Nizialek and Sarah Trissel at midfield really set the tone for us and did a good job owning the field. Defensively, we didn't give them much. On another day, we probably could have had two more goals. Meaghan Nally played great in the back. Up in the front, we had moments where we looked very dangerous. Overall, I'm very happy with our performance today."

HOW IT HAPPENED
· The Blue & Gray controlled the pace early as the Hoyas had possession as well as chances from senior Paula Germino-Watnick.
· The Hoyas got on the board in the 18th minute as a goal kick was intercepted in the middle of the field.  Freshman Julia Leas battled for it and managed a strike from 30 yards out sailing just inside the right post to make it 1-0.
· Moments later, it was Marquette with the chance as Georgetown keeper Anna Leat was forced off her line on a challenge.  Senior defender Meghan Nally had the heroics coming in behind Leat for the save.
· Georgetown added a second right out of halftime as sophomore Boo Jackson dribbled through traffic to the end line and scooped it towards the goal.  Forward Amanda Carolan got a foot on it to redirect it into the net giving the Hoyas the 2-0 advantage.
· The final goal of the game came in the 82nd minute when Nally's two shots off of a corner kick were stopped.  The rebound came to the foot of Carolan who fired it right back to make it 3-0 and tally her second goal of the contest.

OF NOTE
· Carolan's four points on the day moved her up to No. 9 on the all-time list at Georgetown with 72 points in her career. She also bumped up to No. 5 on the all-time list at Georgetown with 30 career goals.
· The Hoyas outshot the Golden Eagles 20-5 and took six corners to MU's four.
· Leat recorded four saves at goal while Marquette's keeper made 11 saves.
· This is Georgetown's third-straight shutout.
