WASHINGTON – Georgetown University baseball alum
Jack Cushing (C'19) is about to enter his first spring training as a member of the Oakland Athletics organization. The right-handed pitcher is one of eight Hoyas playing in affiliated professional baseball and he recently did a video interview for GUHoyas.com recapping his first professional season and talking about how he is preparing for 2020.
Cushing was one of four Hoyas selected in the 2019 MLB Draft as he was taken in the 22nd round (674th overall) by the Athletics. In his first professional season, he pitched in both the Arizona League and the New York-Penn League, combining for a 3-6 record and a 6.00 ERA while bouncing between the starting rotation and the bullpen. He went 1-0 in two games, covering 5.0 innings, for one of Oakland's two Arizona League teams. Cushing was then promoted to short season Vermont on June 26 where he made 11 appearances, including six starts. In 37.0 innings pitched, he struck out 21 while recording a 5.59 ERA.
Cushing enjoyed a strong senior season for the Hoyas in 2019, earning All-BIG EAST Second Team honors, his first postseason accolade. The Flower Mound, Texas native led the pitching staff with a 3.06 ERA and 87 strikeouts, while tying for the team lead with four wins and ranking second with 79.1 innings pitched. His 87 strikeouts rank second in Georgetown's single season and, in his final start of his career, Cushing set the career record with 236 strikeouts. He also finished his career in the program's top 10 in wins (15), strikeouts per nine innings (7.47), innings pitched (284.1) and games started (46). Cushing also set the program's single game strikeout record with 16 against Mount St. Mary's on March 5, 2019.
Georgetown opens the 2020 season on Feb. 14 as the Hoyas travel to Thomasville, North Carolina for a three-game neutral-site series against Navy.
