Hoyas Drop Heartbreaker to UVA in Extra Innings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of games on day two of the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Hoyas fell 3-1 to host Winthrop (5-4) in game one and later fell to Virginia (5-3) 7-6 in extra innings. With the pair of losses, GU falls to 1-8 on the season.

How it Happened
  • Junior Savannah Jones led off the top batting order in the top of the second and knocked one over the fence in left field and made it 1-0 for the Hoyas.
  • In the bottom of the third, Winthrop landed a two-run double to take a 2-1 lead. The Eagles added another run to the board in the bottom of the fourth with a hit up the middle to advance the runners on base.
  • With bases loaded in the top of the fourth, junior Deirdre Gallo singled to third base and scored Jones to make it even at 2.
Hoya Highlights
  • Junior London Diller got the start in the circle. She pitched 2.2 innings and allowed two earned runs off of a pair of hits. She walked two and struck out two.
  • Senior Katie Vannicola relieved Diller and completed the rest of the game. Vannicola gave up one run off of two hits, walked two and struck out four.
  • Jones led the offense with a pair of hits, including a home run and a double. Her home run was her third of the season and of the weekend. Sophomore Mae Forshey also had a double.
  • Georgetown registered eight hits on the day to Winthrop's four.

How it Happened
  • The Cavaliers hit a home run in the bottom of the first to grab an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the top of the third, Gallo landed a double while fighting a full count at the plate. Gallo tied it up 1-1 after scoring off of back-to-back sacrifice hits.
  • Virginia took back its lead in the bottom of the third when a runner on second stole third and scored on a GU error.
  • With bases loaded in the top of the fourth, junior Deirdre Gallo singled to third base and scored Jones to make it even at 2. UVA extended its lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning off of a three-run homer.
  • Forshey singled to the outfield in the top of the fifth and senior Noelle Holiday scored her with a home run over the fence in center field, making it 6-4 in favor of UVA.
  • Freshman Sophia Scarangella kept the momentum going in the same inning with a single to left field and senior Ciara Sullivan tied it up 6-6 blasting the ball out of the park.
  • With a tied score, the teams went into extra innings. Georgetown wasn't able to create any opportunities in its at bat, but the Cavaliers managed to get a hit and score the runner on third to win 7-6.
 
Hoya Highlights
  • Vannicola started out in the circle for the Blue & Gray. The senior allowed six runs off of seven hits in 3.1 innings of work, walked four and struck out two. Sophomore Cassie Henning relieved her for the final 4.0 innings and allowed one run off of two hits.
  • Three different Hoyas recorded two hits apiece, including Forshey, Sullivan and Gallo. Sullivan and Holiday each hit a homer and brought in two RBIs.
  • Gallo's double was the first of her career.

The Blue & Gray will close out the Winthrop Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 16 against Eastern Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
