Hoyas Host Villanova in Play4Kay Matchup on Sunday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team will take on the Villanova Wildcats at McDonough Arena on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a BIG EAST Conference matchup.  The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Ben Gordon-Goldstein and Monika Moore calling the action as well as Kelsey Nicole Nelson reporting from the sideline.  Sunday is also GU's annual Play4Kay game and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas (5-19, 2-11 BIG EAST) are coming off 1-1 week as well as BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition for graduate student Taylor Barnes.
  • Barnes averaged 17.5 ppg along with 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg and 2.0 spg for the week for the Blue & Gray.
  • In the 63-50 win over Xavier on Sunday she led the Hoyas with 18 points and had five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 38 minutes of play.  On Friday, Barnes managed a 17-point performance, including a quartet of 3-pointers, as well as four rebounds in the loss at Butler.
  • In the win at Xavier, the Hoyas boasted four players in double figures.  In addition to Barnes, graduate student Brianna Jones had the double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Nikola Kovacikova also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards along with a squad-high five assists.
  • Rounding it out was senior Anita Kelava posting 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks on the afternoon.
  • Barnes leads the team with 12.8 ppg as the lone Hoya averaging in double figures.    
  • Kelava has been tough on the glass averaging 7.6 rpg.
 
About the Wildcats
  • Villanova is 13-11 overall and 7-6 in BIG EAST play to sit in a tie for sixth in the league.
  • Two Wildcats were honored by the BIG EAST Conference for their play in two games last week.
  • Maddy Siegrist was named the Big East Rookie of the Week for the 10th time this season, while Mary Gedaka earned a spot on the Big East Weekly Honor Roll.
  • In two games last weekend, Siegirst averaged 21.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per contest, while shooting over 41 percent from the floor.
  • Gedaka tallied back-to-back double-doubles in the two road games. After her 11-point, 11 rebound performance at Xavier, she recorded 21 points and 13 rebounds at Butler.
 
Villanova Series
  • The Hoyas are 24-44 against Villanova and 14-15 at home.
  • Earlier this season, the Hoyas fell to the Wildcats in Pennsylvania by a score of 74-53.
  • Barnes led the way for the Hoyas with 14 points, while Kovacikova posted 13 as the two Hoyas in double figures.  Sophomore Shanniah Wright also had nine for the game.
  • Last year, GU went 2-1 against the 'Cats winning at home 68-63 and again in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals by a score of 76-67.
