WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team dropped a 20-6 decision to VCU on Saturday afternoon in Richmond, Virginia. With the loss, the Hoyas slip to 3-7 on the season, while the Rams improve to 7-3.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Angelo Tonas started on the mound and went 4.0 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits, while striking out five.
- Kevin Gates pitched 2.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts, allowing one earned run, and Michael Willis struck out two in a scoreless inning.
- Yareb Martinez had two hits, including a double, while Tony Barreca was on base twice and scored two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU put up four runs in the top of the first and then followed that with three in the second, a single run in the third and two in the fourth inning to go up 10-0.
- The Hoyas answered with four runs in the top of the fifth. After a walk and double put two in scoring position, Patrick DeSalvo drove in a run with a ground out. A wild pitch scored another before a walk and hit by pitch put two more runners on. RBI base hits from Will Gersky and Alex Rosen capped the inning to cut the deficit to 10-4.
- The Rams responded with two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.
- In the eighth, Barreca singled in Ryan M. Davis before Willis drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 16-6.
- VCU scored four more in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final score.
