WASHINGTON – The Georgetown men's tennis team (2-2) wrapped up the weekend trip to West Point, New York by splitting its two meetings over the weekend. The Hoyas outlasted the Binghamton Bearcats (3-4) 5-2 on Saturday evening to jump start a two-match win streak on the season. GU battled host Army (3-3) to a tight 4-2 loss on Sunday afternoon that came down to the final sets of the last two singles matches.
"We cannot thank West Point enough for their hospitality; from coaching staff, to administration, to cadets, these individuals represent our country in a first-class manner," said head coach Courtney Dolehide. "From a mental fortitude perspective, I view this weekend as a great growth opportunity for both of our programs. It is never easy to play road matches on back-to-back days. We use these early season tests to prepare us for BIG EAST conference and tournament play, so that we peak at the right time."
Charlie Sharton and Connor Lee defeated Sebastian Quiros and Luke Karniewich (BInghamton) 6-2 on court three and the duo of Rohan Kadmar and Andrew Rozanov clenched the doubles point for the Hoyas behind a 6-4 finish on court one against Alejandro Pena and Michael Pawlowicz (BInghamton). Georgetown's remaining four points came from wins by Lee on court one (def. Pawlowicz, 6-2, 6-2), Mark Militzer on court four (def. Dan Pergel 6-1, 6-1), Rozanov match clencher on court six (def. Adi Benari 6-3, 6-2) and Luke Ross comeback win on court five (def Quiros 2-6, 6-2, 6-2).
Georgetown and the Army Black Knights came down to the final match on court three after Kadmar and Rozanov won their match against Myles Conlin and A.J. Woodman (Army), 6-3 on court one. On court three, it was Sharton and Lee in a tight battle with Samuel Eden and David Gorshein (Army) that resulted in a 7-6 loss for the Hoyas. During singles play, GU will go on to win two matches in straight sets behind Kieran Foster's 6-2, 6-1 win against Diego Huttepain (Army) and Luke Ross 6-3, 6-4 win against Thomas Lake (Army). The Black Knights picked up a 7-6, 7-5 win against Kadmar on court three, a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win against Militzer on court four and the match clancher against Ian Witmer, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on court six.
The Hoyas will visit the Navy Midshipmen on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9:00 a.m. GU will then host the Drexel Dragons on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in the home opener.
