BETHESDA, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, and had the tying run in scoring position, but fell just short in a 6-5 loss to Coppin State on Tuesday night at Shirley Povich Field. It was the home opener for the Hoyas, who drop to 3-9 on the season, while the Eagles move to 2-5.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Jack Weeks started on the mound and went 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out a career-high eight batters.
- Ryan M. Davis and Eddie McCabe each had three hits to lead the offense, and McCabe had a pair of RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hoyas opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as singles by Yareb Martinez, Alex Gamache and Tony Barreca produced a run.
- Coppin State tied the game 1-1 with a run in the top of the third.
- The score remained the same until the Eagles scored two runs in the top of the seventh. They added another in the eighth to go up 4-1.
- In the bottom of the eighth, the Hoyas loaded the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a hit by pitch. Freddy Achecar III singled into center field to score Davis and make it 4-2.
- Coppin State responded with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the ninth.
- Georgetown put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth before McCabe delivered a two-run double to the scoreboard in left-center field. AJ Lotsis followed with a double of his own to the wall in right field to push McCabe across the plate to make it a one-run game.
- The Hoyas could not get Lotsis home to tie the game, falling by the 6-5 score.

The Hoyas will depart for their 10-day, eight-game Spring Break trip to the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Florida, where they will play against UIC (March 6 & 8), Iowa (March 7), FGCU (March 10), Army West Point ( March 11) and Lafayette (March 13-15).
