Georgetown Athletics Announces 2019-20 Award Winners

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University Department of Athletics announced the recipients of its four major department awards for the 2019-20 academic year on Wednesday.  Three teams were honored as GU released its awards for Outstanding Achievement by a Female Athlete, Outstanding Achievement by a Male Athlete, Outstanding Coaching Achievement and the Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award. 
 
Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award
The Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award is presented each year to the Georgetown senior who best exhibits excellence in both academics and athletics.
Meaghan Nally – Women's Soccer
  • 25th pick in the 2020 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Draft.
  • Led the Hoyas to three-straight BIG EAST Championship titles, two BIG EAST Regular Season titles and a pair of College Cup Semifinal appearances.
  • Graduated from McDonough School of Business in December with a degree in marketing.
  • Appeared in 88 games for the Blue & Gray with 66 starts on the backline.
  • Recorded 22 points in her career from eight goals and six assists.
  • Anchored one of the top defensive teams in the nation, tallying 59 shutouts and allowing just 52 goals from opponents over the course of four seasons.
  • A 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List candidate.
  • Named a 2019 United Soccer Coaches Second Team Scholar All-American and a two-time First Team All-Regional selections.
  • Named a Third Team All-American and a First Team Scholar All-American as a junior.
  • A two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honoree and a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection.
  • Helped the Hoyas set several program records, including fewest goals allowed in 2017 (7), most shutouts in 2017 (17), most consecutive wins in 2018 (14) and most wins in 2018 (21)
 
Outstanding Achievement by a Female Athlete
Riley Fujioka – Women's Swimming & Diving
  • Named the 2020 BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Women's Diver of the Meet.
  • 2020 BIG EAST 1-meter and 3-meter champion, setting the Georgetown record in the 3-meter prelims.
  • Helped lead the Hoyas to their highest point total (749) at the 2020 BIG EAST Championships.
  • Finished first or second in all but three diving events during the 2019-20 season, and never finished below third place in 20 events.
  • Selected as BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week on Oct. 22.
  • Holds the GU record in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives
  • Career five-time All-BIG EAST honoree
 
Outstanding Achievement by a Male Athlete
Dylan Nealis – Men's Soccer
  • No 3 selection in the 2020 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft.
  • Led the Hoyas to the 2019 NCAA National Championship being named the College Cup's Defensive Most Outstanding Player.
  • A MAC Hermann Trophy finalist.
  • Named United Soccer Coaches First Team All-America and First Team All-East Region.
  • A two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honoree and a two-time All-BIG EAST selection.
  • Earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team and won BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors three times in 2019. 
  • Started all 24 games for the Blue & Gray and ranked fifth on the team in scoring with four goals and five assists for 13 points on the year.  The GU defense had 13 shutouts for the season.
  • A two-year captain for the Hoyas.
 
Outstanding Coaching Achievement
Men's Soccer Staff – Brian Wiese, Mike Casper, Connor Klekota, Brian Bouhl
  • Named the United Soccer Coaches Division I National Staff of the Year after winning the 2019 NCAA National Championship.
  • Also was the United Soccer Coaches East Region Staff of the Year.
  • GU finished the year with a mark of 20-1-3 which set the program record for wins in a season and the Hoyas boasted the program's first three-peat, winning the BIG EAST Championship for the third-consecutive year.
  • It was just the second time in program history that the squad has won both the regular season and the championship in the same year.
  • Individually, the Hoyas had two MLS SuperDraft selections, a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, three All-Americans for the first time in program history as well as five players named All-East Region. 
  • In league play, the Blue & Gray won three of the major awards and had six All-BIG EAST selections.
  • Within the NCAA, Georgetown was impressive ranking among the top 10 in shutouts (13, 2nd), goals-against average (0.559, 3rd), assists (50, 3rd), save percentage (0.831, 4th), goals (58, 4th) and points (166, 4th).
