Reed Named to NACDA Social Justice Committee

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed was announced as a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics' (NACDA) Social Justice in College Athletics Initiative Committee on Monday. The committee was formed in a conscious effort to continue important conversations around difficult topics in the industry and in the world.

The goal of the Social Justice in College Athletics Initiative is to provide a platform with valuable resources for collegiate athletics administrators across the country during a time of transformative change in history, as the Association collectively aims to listen, learn and strive for equality, turning words into actions moving forward.

Over the last month, NACDA has hosted two sessions related to diversity and inclusion and social issues that were received by the membership with an overwhelming response: "The Intersection of Race, Student-Athletes and College Athletics in America" and "Developing & Executing Diversity and Inclusion Plans".

NACDA will continue to host monthly webinars throughout the 2020-21 membership year under the Social Justice in College Athletics theme. Written articles with related topics will also be included quarterly in Athletics Administration magazine. Reed's committee will assist in coordinating topics, speakers and authors.  Along with Reed, the group includes: NACDA President Warde Manuel, Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics, University of Michigan; Allen Greene, Director of Athletics, Auburn University and MOAA President China Jude, Senior Associate AD/SWA, University of Wyoming.

Reed just completed his 10th season on the Hilltop after arriving in April of 2010.  He oversees one of the largest broad-based intercollegiate athletics programs in the nation with 29 varsity programs and 700 student-athletes, 12 percent of the undergraduate population at Georgetown. Nationally, Reed served as the president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) for the 2018-19 academic year becoming the first former NACDA intern to be elected president.  He was also recognized as one of 28 recipients of NACDA's Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award in 2017.

Reed serves as president of the John McLendon Foundation Board and is chair of the BIG EAST Men's Basketball Issues Working Group. He is also a mentor in the NCAA Pathways program, sits on the Board of Directors for RISE, on the advisory board for the LGBTQ Center at Georgetown and is a frequent guest speaker at the NCAA, NACDA and other national programs.
