WASHINGTON – Georgetown University placed 365 student-athletes from 22 different sports on the 2019-20 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, when the conference announced the honors on Monday.
Nearly 3,000 BIG EAST student-athletes were selected from the 10 member institutions, along with affiliate members. The 365 student-athletes selected from Georgetown ranked the Hoyas second in the conference.
Men's lacrosse led all Hoya programs with 41 student-athletes selected, while baseball was second with 31 honorees. Women's track & field/cross country had 30 student-athletes recognized, while the women's lacrosse, men's track & field/cross country and men's swimming & diving squads boasted 28. Women's soccer managed 27, women's swimming & diving had 24 and two teams, field hockey and men's soccer, tabbed 22 honorees apiece.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 10 member schools and affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee. There were 2,768 honorees for the 2019-20 academic year. For the third-consecutive year Villanova led all schools with 370 student-athletes recognized, and Georgetown was a close second with 365. Butler had 286 student-athletes receiving certificates, rounding out the top three for the second year. Affiliate student-athletes made up 214 of the honorees.
