Hoyas in the Pros: Crystal Thomas

WASHINGTON– Although COVID-19 has prevented us from competing this fall, there are still plenty of former Georgetown women's soccer players playing professionally. We caught up with a few of them to see how they are handling their seasons during these uncertain times.

This week, we were able to chat with former Hoya Crystal Thomas (C'16), who is currently playing for local National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team the Washington Spirit. Thomas had a tremendous impact on the Georgetown women's soccer program during her time on the Hilltop after transferring from Notre Dame. She led the Hoyas to win their first BIG EAST Championship title and advance to the College Cup for the first time in program history.

Please catch us up, where are you playing these days and how did you end up there? How do you like living there?

Thomas: I am playing for The Washington Spirit in the NWSL. I enjoy living in the DC metro area; it's nice to feel connected to the Georgetown community still.

How has it been for you so far, has it been a difficult adjustment? How would you describe the style of soccer compared to playing at Georgetown?

Thomas: I've played in Norway, Iceland and Australia in their top leagues. The style in Scandinavia has an emphasis on strength and intensity. Georgetown soccer has a lot of the same soccer principles as the Spirit. The Spirit management strives to be a player-centered environment that develops their players and sets them up for success. At the Spirit, we look to keep the ball in our passes soon style format and make good decisions. Our main focus is on winning.

What effect has the COVID-19 pandemic had on you personally and professionally?

Thomas: Our season was delayed and then cut short and we lived in the bubble in Utah for a month to play games. We were also very isolated before leaving for Utah and our preseason was condensed. Not being able to see everyone has been tough for me, as I'm sure it has been on your program. We are back training in Maryland and hoping to play a few more games.

Remind us of your favorite moment in your Georgetown playing career.

Thomas: In the NCAA Quarterfinals, we were playing on Shaw Field against Santa Clara and Coach Kristen and Coach Dave both asked me to shoot the ball. I got the ball near the sideline, was thinking of crossing it when I saw that we were completely outnumbered in the box, so I switched to shooting last second and scored a bending, near-post shot. Rachel Corboz was ecstatic and I jumped into her arms. We won and went to the College Cup for the first time in program history.

What advice would you give somebody who wants to play professional soccer after college?

Thomas: Keep developing your skills and tactical awareness and use your contacts as resources. Getting an agent after college can be a good idea too.
